THE ELEMENTS Pts 1&2; FIRE and AIR!

The Elements Part 1;

“FIRE”

Fire

is the brightest belle at the ball,

a verb masquerading as a noun in party colours.

By nature Impetuous as a capricious girl-child,

Fire never stops to consider the consequences,

and hence, as a consequence,

has an uneven reputation.

Nonetheless, we humans have sought to make Her our own

for as far back as anyone can remember.

But Fire is Fickle. Ask the survivors.

And She is waiting always to bite the hand that feeds Her.

Greedy, bulimic Bitch,

Gulloping down whole forests and cities

in her gluttony,

& vomiting out smoke and ashes.

Every flame a flickering tongue

taste testing everything in sight,

like a fat lady in an orange dress,

rampaging through an ice-cream parlour.

Yet, who can deny it, Life without Her

is cold and grey.

What Celebration is complete without her presence?

What home warm, what city illuminated?

She is the Heart of Alchemy, the Handmaiden of Science.

Some say Fire is the Devils only friend,

but really She’s just being polite.

Some have worshipped Her.

Not the oldest of the gods perhaps

but the most useful. In Asia’s depths

She dances yet on antique altars.

Yes, Fire is older than She looks,

and like an aging actress

prefers to appear at night

when She can be seen to her best advantage.

Indeed, if Fire were a Hollywood film star,

She’d be some flickering, Black & White

film-noir heroine with a shady past.

All smoky voice, and smouldering eyes

and raging sensuality,

long cigarette holder always elegantly poised

and tilted, trailing tendrils and coils about her

like a veil.

Casually she’d flick a lighter

And her presence would light up the screen

and ignite a million dreams.

She is not responsible for her lovers dreams.

She is not responsible at all.

Still,

the furtive fumblings of pyromaniacs with matches

behind dumpsters in seedy back alleys,

The confident, controlled moves of the professional arsonist,

smoothing the way for Development,

I’d be lying if I said She didn’t

find these attentions exciting.

It has sometimes been suspected that Fire is a Fluid,

but this has not been proved.

Fire will outlive the Human Race

but, unlike the other Elements,

She will miss us when we’re gone.

 The Elements Part 2;

“AIR”

Some believe that Air is really a very fine solid

through which the birds burrow like earthworms.

Others say that Air is really an aquarium without walls,

a form of fluid.

Certainly it displays the characteristics of each

and thus its status can be considered as doubtful.

It has even been argued

that it is not really an Element at all,

but merely a general absence of the other three.

Yet we’d miss it if it weren’t there.

Against this all other arguments collapse.

It is a vile canard to suggest that he is a rabid atheist who became a priest as part of a cunning conspiracy to bring organised religion into disrepute thru his unsavoury antics.

  1. Great post thanks. I really enjoyed it very much. You have a great blog here. Thanks again for sharing.

  2. I have been reading your blog and think very highly of your writing. Your poetry is beautiful and thoughtful and that is why I have nominated you for the Liebster blog awards. This award is given to blogs with less than 200 followers who deserve a little more recognition. There are a few simple rules that go along with the award. They are as follows as passed on to me.

    1. Give a shout out to the blogger who nominated you by linking back to their blog.
    2. Nominate 5 other blogs with a following of less than 200.
    3. Spread the good blog karma.
Lastly, don’t forget to add the Liebster blog award image to your post.
    Best wishes.

  3. Creative, but going back to the earliest of human musings and poetry trying to discover what the earth and life meant. This poetry is as good as it gets and deserves to be praised.

    • Gosh your making me blush!
But yes, I would say that these Element poems come from a very primitive part of the brain. More to do with the symbolic than the logical, it is where puns and archtypes come from. As you yourself note, its also part of how we make sense of the world. We ignore these old, ‘illogical’ parts of our consciousness at our own peril. Euripedes play ‘the Bacchae’ makes this point quite clearly and is still relevant in our own modern times. (so does ‘Forbidden Planet’ come to think of it)
