The Air is Tired Here

Kiddie punk bands

playing in the hotel bar,

Hoping to duplicate the excitement

We generated 30 years ago

with their carbon copy chords

and recycled riffs,

They generate instead

a desperate banality,

Just another fashion, after all.

The air is tired here

from these repetitions,

From the hum of electrical discharge

The hammering/ the distortion,

The furious pounding against the

No-where door of Because.

The air is tired

From these instrumentalities,

These frailties amplified

Till they become vices

Traps and flaws.

Bludgeoning at our weaknesses

Grasping at futility,

A drunken garbling

Of inarticulate catch-cries

Posturing in endless mirrors

A sewage stew of lumpen gray

That does not sparkle/ has no wit

A sodden mass of cardboard,

Rags and ashes, slogans scrawled

And music stirred with a fork.

I include today a poem written about me in 1998 by a fellow Brisbane poet, the esteemed Mz Sophie Jean, when I was buzy campaigning for Cannabis Law Reform as a HEMP Senate candidate.

I’m always amused by the way others perceive me…

As the addict espouses the benefits

of habit…

Although swathed in delerious delights

He paints a pure pleasure

So divine

That to argue is to cast stones

At this mirror of grace.

Cast not these rocks at this infidel

For, although his logic lies

Wrecked against a god

Greater than he

Still he remains nurtured in the embrace

of this great joy.

–poem by Sophie Jean, 1998

  1. Interesting, but at 83 I never experienced either punk or drugs in my lifetime. I gave up popular music after the Beatles. My life has been rich and varied, never boring, full of joy and excitement, and has always brought me more happiness than most people have.

    • Punk? You had to be there at the time before it became just another major marketing commodity.
No drugs malcom? So you’ve never smoked a cigarette, had a glass of beer, cranked up on sugar and coffee, etc.
Drugs is a complex topic, generalisations are difficult at best, but I will say this from my experiance and research;Cannabis is a Sacred Herb, surely a gift from some kindly God and should be used wisely and with respect.
But don’t worry, I’m not prejaudiced against non-users, we all have our path thru Life, what works for me may not work for you.
In another life I would have been a shaman.
