ESCAPE

ESCAPE

3rd floor of the 9th Block

Housing Commission Flats.

Walking up the dreary steps

Concrete stained with urine/ blood

Suddenly I had to smile

when I saw these words

hastily scrawled,

in a childish hand

On the fire-escape wall,

saying:

“KERRY, JOHN AND CRAIG LIVED HERE.

BUT THEY FINALLY GOT OUT

AFTER TEN LONG YEARS!”

  1. Reblogged this on PRESIDENTS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM.

  2. Great Poem Rev. Such a shame that the pain this man went through robbed him of the understanding that he lived on, and could have created again a world like his past, only it would have been in the present, with polaroids perhaps faded by the summer sun.

    • Hi Jeff!
I guess you’re referring to THE PHOTOGRAPHS tho your comment has ended up here..
Indeed, it was a great pity, he had much to give I felt.
Funnily, what kicked this poem off was thru me going thru my own old photographs/etc recently at the request of the State Library, who had asked for artefacts from my early years for their records on local culture. The more I delved the more I felt a growing feeling of claustrophobia. I had the fleeting urge to burn everything. And I remembered my friend..
The past is a trap that waits for all of us as we grow older. Run!
