Imagine Moses coming down the Mountain

like some self-important Sumerian Clerk

scurrying out of the Temple Accounts Dept.,

with a cuniformed clay tablet tucked

under his sweaty armpit.

Just another busy-body Bureaucrat with a briefcase

or a Lawyer with a List

presenting his Client’s Contractual Conditions.

A proper legal document and all

it is, each agenda item neatly

notarized and numbered like:

Section {6.}: “Thou shalt not..”

Subsequently subject to revisions,

human nature being what it is,

the rest of the Bible is mainly

amendments and addendums,

apocryphal sub-clauses legislated

by theological conveyancing-clerks:

      (“..and excepting where legal

exemptions & mitigations apply, as in:

      a) self-defence

      b) army or police membership

      c) mercy killings

      d) etc.,

is liable to a penalty of…”)

Yes it all became

too complex by the Middle Ages,

all those Indulgences and Dispensations

and obtaining the Pope’s favours.

Sorting the Sins into Minor & Major

on a sliding scale with easy repayments.

Myself, if I were Moses

I would have kept it simple

and less Forbidding.

Made my main point,

then left to leave the Tribe alone

to try it out themselves,

and hope they’d reap the Consequences

falling all around them

like rich, ripe Fruit from a Tree.

I’d probably just say something like,

“This is God’s only Commandment..

..and leave it at that. Perhaps

I wouldn’t even frame it in the Imperative,

a Commandment would be Contradictory

in this kind of case, I think,

a bit like PC bullying.

So, I’d just make the Suggestion, that here,

for what it’s worth, is what I believe

to be God’s advice, that:

“It’s best to be kind.”

And hope that’s enough.

One Response to “COMMANDMENT”

  1. Yes, that would have been quite enough, but those religious idiots from all the old times just had to have their say, and it’s been messed up ever since…
