Autumn’s cooling breeze returns

and shakes awake the sleeping trees,

sweeps Summer’s sultry, sweaty torpor

somewhere far away across the seas,

perhaps to bother tropic islands packed

with Tourists,

or refugees.

May mad winds drive away the damp

and humid air!

Let the days dense with sweat depart,

and the lank and greasy hair!

Oh my temperate Love,

it is an Autumn day to which

to thee I would compare.

Enough of these hot, still & somber days,

the Earth’s crust baking beneath the Sun,

the rain which has not fallen,

the rivers which do not run.

Cool Autumn come, help us forget

our human race is almost done.

The Reverend Hellfire is a practised Performance Poet and Inspirational Prophet who lives in a small village perched under a dyspeptic Volcano. Despite his best efforts to convince them, none of the other inhabitants believe the Volcano exists. The Reverend, as a result, has gone quite mad, and alas may be seen to this day, a lonely, ragged figure, wandering the dusty & deserted village streets, muttering to himself about lava flow & pyroclastic currents.
